Understanding Diabetes

Is a comprehensive course that covers the pathophysiology of prediabetes and diabetes, the different types, diagnostic labs, complications associated with diabetes, other comorbidities, treatment regimens and the essentials of living with and managing the disease.

The 7 Self-Care Behaviors of Diabetes Management

The 7 Self- Care Behaviors are the foundational components to help improve diabetes management. Implementing small changes learned in these courses will lower A1C levels, reduce risk of complications and create a sustainable healthier lifestyle leading to better outcomes. Healthy Eating

Upon completion of this course session, participants will:

- Understand how various foods affect blood glucose levels.

- Recognize the benefits of maintaining a regular eating schedule.

- Discover ways to incorporate favorite foods into a balanced diet while managing blood sugar.

- Understand the importance of portion control.

Taking Medications

Upon completion participants will:

- Gain better understanding of the medication they are taking.

- Maintain optimal blood glucose levels to prevent complications associated with diabetes.

- Adhere consistently to prescribed medication schedules to maximize effectiveness.

- Monitor for and promptly address any side effects or adverse reactions to medications.

- Work closely with healthcare providers to adjust medications as needed for individual health needs.

- Learn where to inject insulin/non insulin injectables.

- identify lipodystrophy when injecting insulin.

Healthy Coping

Upon completion participants will :

- Gain insight on how to cope with diabetes.

- Recognize healthy/unhealthy coping strategies.

- See how well you are coping by taking the coping assessment scale.

- Learn the importance and significance of starting and keeping a daily journal to track feelings.

Problem Solving

Upon completion, participants will:

- Learn to recognize trends and patterns in blood sugars.

-Learn how to correct high and low blood sugars.

- Learn other variables that affect blood sugars besides food for better understanding and management.

-Practice scenarios in identifying patterns and trends.

Reducing Risks

Upon completion. participants will:

- Learn the associated complications of diabetes

- Learn how to implement changes to prevent complications

- Understand the importance of keeping scheduled appointments

- Learn the importance of good dental health

Upon completion, participants will be able to:

- Define and differentiate between aerobic and anerobic
- Identify exercise types
-Understand physiological effects

Monitoring

Upon completion of this course participants will:

- Understand the importance of checking blood sugars

-Recognize common/severe symptoms of hyperglycemia

- Recognize symptoms of hypoglycemia

- Preventing and treating hyper/hypoglycemia

- Practice scenarios in treating high and low blood sugars

- Learn the proper method to checking blood sugars.

Continuous Glucose Monitor and Insulin Pumps

Upon completion of the course, participants will:

-Understand the Continuous Glucose Monitoring device.
-Understand what an insulin pump is
- Learn how these devices work/help to control blood sugars
-Determine if you should have one
-Understand criteria to get theses devices

Carbohydrate Counting and Correction Factor

Upon completion of this course, participants will:

- Understand what carbohydrate counting means

- Learn how to count carbohydrates

- Learn how to make adjustments when counting carbohydrates

- Practice carbohydrate counting with insulin dosing.

- Learn how to bring high blood sugars back into normal range with the correction factor formulas.
